Trans-genic potato with an increased amount of protein was created in India

In India, scientists from the Central Potato Research Institute have created a genetically modified potato with the protein content, which exceeds the rate of the product by 60%.

In addition, a new type of potato showed high rates of growth and yield – a hectare gives 14-25% more products. This was reported on Wednesday, September 22, by the media.

According to the developers of genetic potatoes, many poor people on earth can be fed with this potato.

According to the inventors, the average potato tuber contains about 3 grams of protein.

This is 6% of the recommended daily norm set by the United States.

In Indian potatoes, this figure was increased to 4.8 g, which represents 10% of American standard.

It was possible to obtain this result by adding a gene of the plant called amaranth in the vegetable.

It had been one of the major cereal crops in South America and Mexico for 8 thousand years and it even was called “Aztecs’ wheat” and “Incas’ bread”.

The safety of the products was tested on laboratory rats and rabbits, which did not die, and showed no allergy to new foods.

According to these results, the developers claimed the safety of new potatoes and continue tohe experiments.
