Sri Lankan filmmaker Sumithra Peries falls on Goa beach

Panaji, Sep 19 (PTI) Sri Lanka’s legendary filmmaker Sumithra Peries was injured after she had a fall on the Dona Paula beach near here. The island country’s first woman filmmaker is on Goa visit to participate in the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF). Peries told PTI that she had gone for sight seeing on the beach near here this morning when she had a fall.

“My head hit the floor and my leg sprained,” she said. The 75-year-old filmmaker was later taken to a private hospital where she was checked and discharged immediately. “It could have been a major mishap but God was on our side,” Peries told the delegates during a SAFF seminar on ‘Our Films Global Films’ held this evening. The filmmaker said when she met with an accident everybody turn up there to see me.

That shows that there are no borders, she added. Pereis was Sri Lanka’s ambassador to France in 1990s and has won more than 15 international awards for her films across the globe. Her most popular film and considered one of the finest Sri Lankan films ever made is ‘Ganga Addara’ (Beside the River) which dealt with the relationship between a doctor and a mentally-ill girl.
